DCHS clubs offer something for everyone

Are you tired of sitting on your couch, watching cartoons and gnawing on a stale bag of potato chips? Do you feel like your life needs more meaning in it? Oh, do we have a solution for you! Delphi Community High School has a list of  diverse and exciting clubs fit for anyone. Clubs are a good way to make new friends, get involved in your community, and spice up your college application. Take a look at what we’ve got to offer.

Key Club is a community service based club that focuses on leadership, time management, and community involvement. The members complete many community services projects throughout the year. Their biggest project is fundraising for senior scholarships. If you would like to be a member of Key Club, you can pay a visit to Mr. Milligan’s room with $13 for dues.

Varsity D is a club that you automatically belong to if you are an athlete. It is designed to give Delphi athletes two different types of awards when they are a senior for their efforts while playing throughout their high school career. Varsity D has two fundraising opportunities that students must participate in, the homecoming Powder Puff game and the selling of Christmas Wreaths. The student athlete must make enough money for the club to buy their own award or the student athlete can purchase the award when they are a senior.

Every year Varsity D will have around $1800.00 for varsity D awards. The extra money that is raised is usually spent on athletic teams. Items that Varsity D has helped purchase in the past have been the tennis ball machine, a batting cage for softball, lane markers for swimming, head gear for wrestling, pole vaults for track, and a golf cart.

French Club celebrates all that is French. They meet once a month to delve into French culture including food, holidays, and entertainment. The biggest project for the French Club is the Mardi Gras celebration in February or March. To be in this fun-filled club, you only have to pay a fee of $10 to Madame Tyner and either currently be taking a French class or have taken one in the past.

The Science Club is something new and exciting to Delphi this year. Mr. Clark, the sponsor, stated, “For the first semester we will focus on Physics topics, but we will be adding Analytical Chemistry to the club in the spring semester.  The projects that we will be exploring will be related to the course topics but will allow students to explore them further.” The club will be open to those who have completed or are currently in Physics; and come spring, you are welcome if you have completed Chem. 1. For their biggest project, the Science Club will be building 10 ft. trebuchets to launch water balloons.

Spanish Club is for those who are looking to get a little more Spanish outside the classroom. This club has a fun learning environment and offers tutoring after school. If you are interested in joining the Spanish club, see Senora Hollingsworth.

Club 365 is a club new to Delphi this year. Their motto: “We are here to help people 365 days a year!” (They must get a day off on Leap Year.) One of their major projects is planning the Veteran’s Day Program. The students of this club also participate in Genius Hour, which is where they study a topic of their own interest on their own time.

The drama department is currently in the process of starting a Drama Club. Their hope for this club is to meet once a month to practice vocal ranges, auditions, set building, prop management, and improvisation.  If you would like to join this club when it is started, or just become a part of the drama department, contact Kate Layman. Kate, a junior, is active in all the theater productions and challenges you to do the same. “Being on stage isn’t the only part of acting. There is so much more to learn that can be carried into life experience.  I just built a bunk bed last weekend…what can you do?”

Now that you’ve seen what clubs are available, are you inspired to be active in one? If not, you can be like sophomore, Ariel Wolfe and make your own club. Ariel started a club titled Oracles Against Cancer. The club is all about making a difference in the lives of cancer patients for the better, helping to raise money for cancer research, and raising  awareness for cancer. If a student wants to join this club, they are  welcome!  “The more the merrier,”  said Ariel Wolfe. Contact Ariel to join Oracles Against Cancer.

Delphi’s clubs are much more than extracurricular activities. They are a source of fellowship, fun, and learning experiences. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to go out and join one of Delphi’s fine clubs. You can’t go wrong with any of them!
