Delphi wins Battle of the Books

Battle of the Books kicked off in October. Students scrambled to put together teams, gather books, and start reading. Two mini competitions were held in January and February where teams could test their knowledge and potentially earn extra points which are added to their team total on the actual competition day.

This year’s Battle of the Books (BOB) competition was held on Feb 17. Many teams studied their books for four months, all in the effort to be one of the two teams that gets to compete against Carroll in this annual battle.

With 10 teams competing, the stress can get to a student. Sophomore Abigail Kender said, “Competition is very stressful because you have to read as many books as possible and remember the little details.” The stress didn’t seem to faze some teams. The two winning teams won with the impressive scores of 107 and 102 points out of the 150 possible.

The first place team from the Delphi meet consisted of Jesyka Brown, Eliot Brown, Emily Kender, Sydney Gage, and Emily Troche. In second place came  Miranda Edwards, Kate Layman, Paul Marvel, Lacie Tomson, and Laura Carbaugh,. Those members formed together to play, and win, against the winning teams from Carroll.

Their hours of reading and studying paid off. Delphi beat Carroll with a score of 105 – 88. This year marked the 11th year of BOB competitions.  Delphi has won 10 times and has claimed the title the last nine years straight.
