Clemson reins supreme

As the college football season has come to an end, the playoffs came in with a plot of revenge as the fourth year of the playoffs took its course. In last season’s title game, Alabama beat Clemson 45-40 in a high scoring thriller. This season, Alabama, led by freshman quarterback Jalen Hurts and sophomore running back Bo Scarbrough were looking to win their third title in four years. Clemson. Clemson led by senior quarterback Deshaun Watson, was looking to win their first college football playoff.  

Just moments after the game got underway, the Tide got on the board with of a 26 yard touchdown run from Bo Scarbrough. That was the start of what would become another high scoring thriller that many believe to be the best title game in awhile. Scarbrough continued doing what he does best as he exploded for a 37 yard touchdown that put Bama ahead 14-0 early into the first quarter.  Early in the second quarter, Deshaun Watson took matters into his own hands as he ran it in for an eight yard touchdown to take the score into halftime at 14-7. The Crimson Tide could smell what would have been their third title in four years.

As the second half started, Alabama kicker Adam Griffith made a 27 yard field goal that extended the lead to 17-7. It took only a few minutes for the Tigers to respond with a score of their own, a 24 yard pass to Hunter Renfrow that resulted in seven points. Clemson slowly chipped away at the lead and was down 17-14 before Jalen Hurts found O.J. Howard for a 68 yard touchdown that gave Alabama a little breathing room once again.

Early into the final quarter of play, Watson found his favorite target, Mike Williams, for the four yard score that cut the deficit back down to three points. With four minutes yet to go, Clemson found the endzone again, this time with a goal-line stance as Wayne Gallman punched it in to gain Clemson’s first lead of the game at 28-24. Not long after, Bama responded as Hurts used his legs for a 30 yard touchdown run that gave a 31-28 lead back to Alabama. With 2:07 left to play, Clemson went 66 yards on eight plays to get to the Alabama two yard line. With just seconds left on the play clock, Deshaun Watson rolled out to his right and found Hunter Renfrow standing in the end zone wide open to give Clemson their first championship in 35 years.
