The hidden gems of Netflix you should already be watching

In order to effectively procrastinate doing homework, one must watch Netflix for an ungodly number of hours until it becomes socially responsible to hit the sack. Welcome to the life of a high school student. However, what few obsessors know is that our favorite pastime is chock full of television and film masterpieces, but we continue to watch the eleven seasons of Grey’s Anatomy on repeat until we’re all but Shonda Rhimes ourselves. This is pretty sad, folks. What do you say we scroll down past “currently watching,” so you can discover the magic for yourself? Below is a list of movies and tv shows that you probably didn’t even know were within your grasps.

Scandal

From the brilliant but torturous mind that brought us to our knees with Grey’s Anatomy, comes a political thriller all about lies, deception, and competition. Practically based off of the 2016 election (Emilee, this one’s for you), Scandal takes us on a ride with speed bumps you won’t see coming. We follow the life of Mellie Grant, a former first lady turned elected senator who is now running to become the first woman president. Then there’s the Republican nominee Hollis Doyle, who is a business tycoon running for office. He’s abrasive, outspoken, and incredibly sexist. Despite his obviously misconstrued message, he continuously wins the Republican primaries. Sound familiar? So, if you love trainwrecks but can’t bear to admit in broad daylight that you’ve been watching CNN for six hours, be sure to pop by and check out this not-so-well-known drama.

Gotham

We all know the story of the ten-year-old boy whose parents were shot, so then the boy took his anger and guilt up to the mountains of some off-the-grid location and learned rad ninja skills from a supervillain (which he was oblivious  to at the time because that would totally kill his credibility), but do you have any idea what happened in the months post Wayne murders? How did Bruce Wayne cope? Well, in the adventurous drama Gotham, we follow the life of a young James Gordon as he attempts to bring the Wayne murderer to justice. We also learn the origins of some of Batman’s most notorious villains including Catwoman, The Joker, Penguin, and Harvey Dent.

The Chaperone

He’s jacked, he’s got ridiculously long hair, and he’s got a teddy bear smile. He is Paul Levesque, better known as Hunter Hearst Helmsley, better known as WWE icon Triple H, and he’s the star of WWE film The Chaperone. This film follows former robber Ray Bradstone as he skips out on one last job for the gang so he can accompany his daughter on a field trip. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Legendary

All right, let’s get serious (I’m actually not sure how serious I can possibly be when the lead actor is John Cena, but I’ll try.) Anyway, Legendary follows the life of bullied high schooler, Cal. Finally at his breaking point, Cal decides to join the wrestling team, where he hopes his estranged brother will help him train and eventually mend the burned bridges within the family.

Begin Again

Begin Again first attracted me when I learned that Adam Levine starred in it. The second thing was the utterly life-changing sound track. But when I actually sat down to watch the independent film, I was astounded by the simple cinematic beauty that it was. The film follows a failing music producer who stumbles upon a broken-hearted singer/songwriter in a bar. He makes it a priority to launch her careerand save his own.

Cyberbully

This is an issue that is all too real for many of us. This film brings to life the horrible reality that is online bullying. Following teenage girl Taylor Hillridge, we see what happens when friends turn on each other, and the truth that words hurt more than sticks and stones ever will.

Fixer Upper

Chip and Joanna Gaines, farmhouses, and Pinterest-worthy decorwhat else could you possibly need to be happy? That’s what I thought. We all have a secret obsession with the HGTV channel whether you want to admit it or not. (Just know that if you don’t admit it, I know you’re a liar.) Anyway, Fixer Upper is much different than other home remodel shows shows because Fixer Upper is tailored for those who adore the idea of living in a farmhouse with a cute ‘lil herb garden in the window sill.

To Kill a Mockingbird

No.Words.Needed. Do you understand what this means? The greatest movie ever based off of the greatest book ever is AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. What are you even waiting for? Christmas? If you don’t know what this classic is about, you’ve honestly been living under a rock. (Or you didn’t have Mrs. T freshman year.) If you don’t take anything else away from this article, just know that I, Hannah Irelan, told you that you’d best go watch this film or I will come find you. (Also, read the book.)

As I went through Netflix compiling the perfect films and television shows to pique your interest, I too discovered gems that I completely forgot existed. It’s truly amazing the things you discover when you take the time. So, next time you find yourself awake at 4 a.m. with a Netflix craving, try something new.
