Delphi: home of the skillets

2013 Battle of the Books champions “Team America” retained the skillet for the 7th time in a row.

Coming Back Stronger might have been the name of one of the books for this year’s Battle of the Books, but it also explains our  last seven BOB teams perfectly. This year’s team was made up of  freshmen Kate Layman, Quincy Adams, Miranda Edwards, Miranda Clingenpeel, and Lacie Tomson;  sophomores Zoey Green, Jessica Brown, Cody Stern, and Chandler Underhill; and  junior Cami Garrison. They’ve taken to calling themselves “Team America.”

This year was the 9th annual Bacon Bowl Battle of the Books. Battle of the Books, or BOB, is a local competition that stems out of Delphi and Carroll High schools. The BOB season begins in October when teams of five are organized and the year’s ten books are revealed. The local competition takes place in early February. On the given night, teams gather in the Little Theater for a battle of knowledge and memory. Teams hear seventy-five questions about the books and have 20 seconds to answer each question. After seventy-five questions, the bottom teams are eliminated and only the top six teams remain to tackle seventy-five more questions. At the end of the evening, a school champion is crowned, and Delphi’s top two teams join together for a strong team of ten who move on to battle the winner of Carroll’s competition.

Delphi has been on a winning streak the past six years and added its seventh straight win on Feb. 20, defeating Carroll with an impressive score of 106-85.

Freshman Kate Layman, the captain of “Team America,” said, “Our only plan was to give each member of the team two books to read and master.” She went on to explain that three of them had been on the same team since sixth grade while the rest had gone through different teams along the way.

Seeing as the majority of these students are underclassmen, many more victories are looming in the future for our dominating BOB teams.
