Trap and release may come to Delphi

With the ever-increasing problem of feline overpopulation in Delphi, a group of volunteers along with the help of local veterinarians are in the process of getting a plan for a new trap and release approved by the city council.

The Trap, Neuter, Release program will be directed by volunteers with aid from local veterinarians Dr. Lawrence Stauffer and Dr. Dawn Frank. Mayor Randy Strasser and Community Development Director Kevin Kologinsky have also put in their effort to getting the program going.

“This is a feral cat only program, and it has been shown both in Europe and the United States to be one of the most effective ways to control the problem,” stated Dr. Frank on the issue. “It is actually more economical and more effective at controlling overpopulation than trapping and euthanizing,” she continued.

Once the program is approved, Dr. Frank plans to test the feral cats for feline leukemia and feline aids, as well as neuter and vaccinate them for rabies and distemper.

While many in town do all they can to help feed or even take in these feral cats, the problem has simply gotten out of control. The many dedicated and caring volunteers are ready to make a difference in the community and help reduce the amount of feral cats in Delphi.

“There are a huge number of animal lovers in Delphi. No one wants to see an animal suffer or starve. Continuing to ignore this feral cat explosion resolves nothing.”
