Faculty Couple

– Mr. and Mrs. Tyner

    • How long have you been together?
      • We dated for four weeks and then got engaged! We hadn’t even said “I love you” when he asked me to marry him. ( We both just KNEW that it was right). Five months later we were married. That was 39 years ago so obviously it was meant to be.
    • When did you first meet?
      • We met at Ball State when we were seniors. I was actually casually dating his friend, but the more we did together as a group of friends the more we realized we liked each other. We lived in the same dorm.
    • What did you do on your first date?
      • Mrs. Tyner: On our first date – Valentine’s Day 1981 – Jim showed up four hours early! He lived in Delphi and I lived and was student teaching in Indy. I wasn’t expecting it to be him when the doorbell rang and I answered the door in a bathrobe and curlers in my hair.  He stood on the porch with a heart shaped box of chocolates, a dozen red roses and said he couldn’t wait any longer to see me again! We had 10:00 dinner reservations at a very elegant, expensive French restaurant. He had Duck A L’Orange and I had Chicken Cordon Bleu and I can tell you exactly what we were both wearing. He swept me off my feet; it was a wonderful evening!
      • Mr. Tyner: Linda did forget to mention the strolling violinist that made the evening magical.
    • What do you appreciate most about the other person?

      • Mrs. Tyner: There is so much to appreciate about Jim but first and foremost he is always a gentleman – kind, giving, thoughtful. He is my very best friend and my rock.  When both my parents were so ill and died last year, he kept me sane and was there night and day as I grieved. He was a great Dad to our children and the best “Poppa” to our grandchildren.  They simply adore him. He is an adventurous travel partner and an excellent cook and baker and for all these things and more I appreciate him. I am one lucky woman and wife.

      • Mr. Tyner: Linda is a compassionate, caring person. She is my soulmate and life partner. I have been blessed to have her by my side on this journey we call life. We are both compatible with many things with the exception of Star Trek. (I like it and she does not).

  • Who wears the pants in the relationship?
    • Mrs. Tyner: We are a team and we compromise on many things. He would probably say I do as his favorite expression is “Happy wife….happy life”!  I definitely am the social director and vacation planner but neither of us dictates to the other. He is a good listener and we communicate well.
    • Mr. Tyner: When it comes to wearing the pants of the family, I could honestly say we BOTH do when it comes to making the easy and tough decisions we deal with on a daily basis. It sometimes also depends on the situation.
