Starting this semester and continuing for years to come is a new attendance policy for Indiana students. This policy consists of students only being allowed to miss 9 days till they lose a credit for their class. This policy is significantly different from the old because an absence will be in play if it’s excused or not.
The purpose of this new policy is to limit students missing school even if they are being excused. However this could possibly be hurting a lot of students in the future due to monthly medical appointments, therapy, etc. Some places are during business hours which can be quite difficult to work with while attending school. Most students have things outside of school such as sports, church, work, etc. Again this can be hard to work with and schedule around.
The policy did give each student 2 more days they are allowed to miss compared to the old one being 7 unexcused, but this really doesn’t do a lot for students. Absences can not be “bought back.” At Delphi students are provided with the privilege to come to a Wednesday Night School and gain an absence back. Starting this semester Delphi will still offer Wednesday Night School but it will not be used to gain a day a student missed.
In conclusion, the new attendance policy is in place for the students to get more of an education and physically be at school. However this policy will be a problem and can put some students at risk of losing credit.
