Celebrity trend: giving children unusual names

X Æ A-Xii, the son of Grimes and Elon Musk, inspired many memes, including this one.

Remember when Elon Musk and Grimes had a baby and the first thing they did was meme him with his name? X AE A-Xii is the perfect example of an unusual celebrity baby name. After all, there are whole articles about how to pronounce the name and why it came about. Oddly enough, this isn’t even a rare occurrence.

Now, of course, is where I will take some time for a disclaimer. I mean no harm in writing this article. If your name also happens to be on this list, just know that you are one of a very few. Congratulations on the unique name!

If you are familiar with the MCU, you know Pepper Potts. In real life, her name is Gwyneth Paltrow. She happens to have a 17-year-old daughter named Apple. When asked why she named her daughter Apple, Paltrow said, “When we were first pregnant, her daddy said, ‘If it’s a girl I think her name should be Apple,’” So, her name became Apple.

Another celebrity I feel like we need to discuss is Frank Zappa. He has many children, but three of them have particularly interesting names: Dweezil, Diva Muffin, and Moon Unit. None of them decided to change their names; Moon even went as far as to say that she loves her name because of its uniqueness..

Celebrity children aren’t the only ones with weird names though. As of 2020, over 200 children have been named Abcde. Also, to protest a birth certificate law in Sweden, someone named their child Brfxxccxxmnpcccclllmmnprxvclmnckssqlbb11116 (it’s pronounced Albin). The difference between celebrities and the general public giving their children odd names can be seen very clearly though.

While I have nothing against celebrities giving their children unusual names, I think it shows a kind of privilege over the general public. In the real world, children with unusual names are more likely to be bullied, change their name, or become antisocial. As much as I hate to say it, people actually do have bias against foreign names. However, someone like Pilot Inspektor Lee who was born to two celebrities won’t face as many problems as a person without fame.

People can do what they want. They can name their kids how they want, even if that means naming a newborn baby Audio Science; however, I feel like people need to think about their child’s future before giving them a crazy name. Even celebrities who don’t think there are consequences could be causing their child to grow up being bullied about just another thing they cannot change.
