In the spring of 2020, Conan Gray released an album that would kick-start his fame as a music artist. The album, “Kid Krow,” landed in the Top 10 Debut on the Billboard 200 album chart, and has now surpassed 4 billion streams on Spotify. Track 10 on the album, Heather, gained popularity and continues to be his most popular release.
Following the growth in listeners of the song, a tradition was formed. December 3rd, now known as “Heather Day” by fans has become a day to be acknowledged, and potentially even celebrated. The opening lyrics of the track are the cause of this, as Gray sings “I still remember, 3rd of December, me in your sweater.” The track is one of heartbreak, jealousy, and pining, shown through the form of a polyester sweater. In the end, the aforementioned sweater is given from the person Gray is singing to, to a girl named Heather. Gray took the popularity of the song and created a line of sweaters that would be released every December 3rd following the original release of the track, a solid colored crew neck with embroidered text, commonly reading “your sweater.”
Now, 5 years after the original release, it has become common for people to wish to receive a sweater on this occasion every year, and has become a popular point of commentary on social media. People will usually share whether or not they’ve received a sweater, typically a more sad form of content with undertones of longing for one, or missing one they may have had in the past. It is also common for the artist himself to post about the day, usually mentioning the fact that he, like fans, has yet to receive the article of clothing.
