2014 in sports
Even as an avid sports fan myself, it was hard to sum up 2014 in sports. However, 2014 did not disappoint. It was an extremely fun year in sports as two major worldwide events took place in the Winter Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup. And with fun, came sorrow, as all sports fans shed a tear as The Captain played his final game in the pinstripes. Without further ado, here were some highlights.
Famous Jameis
2013-14 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston led his Florida St. Seminoles to a BCS championship over Auburn with his touchdown throw to Kelvin Benjamin with 13 seconds left. The Seminoles ended the season undefeated with a 14-0 record.
Seahawks dominate
Richard Sherman and the Seattle Seahawks demolished Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII with a final score of 43-8. It was a battle between Seattle’s top defense and Denver’s top offense and the famous saying was true. Defense wins championships.
Winter Olympic Games
The Winter Olympics were held in Sochi, Russia this past February. The United States of America put on a solid performance ending up with 28 total medals, second only to the host nation Russia’s 33.
March Madness
Shabazz Napier and the Connecticut Huskies were atop the college basketball world once again with a victory in the championship game over the Kentucky Wildcats.
Spurs top Heat
Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs showed basketball fans how the game was meant to be played with a total team NBA Finals win over the Miami Heat. In the final three games of the series, the Spurs won by an average margin of victory of 19 points.
LeBron’s homecoming
In a much anticipated and televised decision, LeBron James decided to return to Cleveland and join Kyrie Erving and the Cavaliers. LeBron had won two championships in four years as a part of the Miami Heat.
FIFA World Cup
All Americans united in spirit as they watched the US Men’s National Team advance to the round of 16 in the FIFA World Cup, held throughout Brazil. Germany outlasted Messi and Argentina 1-0 in the final with Mario Götze’s 113th minute goal.
The summer of Rory
Rory Mcilroy dominated the competition on the links as he took home the final two majors of the year, the British Open and the PGA Championship. Many are highly anticipating the 2015 Masters to see if Rory can complete the grand slam.
Derek Jeter retires
Number two for the Yankees called it quits after the 2014 season. The sure hall-of-famer ended his career driving in the game winning run in his last at bat at Yankee Stadium.
Giants win another World Series
The San Francisco Giants won their third World Series in five years beating the Kansas City Royals in game 7. Throughout the playoffs and World Series, Madison Bumgarner put on a show, earning himself World Series MVP honors.
