Grease: Live!
#GreaseLive dominated Twitter the night of Jan. 31, when the highly anticipated TV adaptation of Grease premiered on Fox. Fans of the 1978 movie had been patiently waiting for the 7:00 pm debut for months, brushing up on their 50s lingo and subtly stalking the actors and actresses who would soon portray beloved characters. The cast chosen for the musical was well-rounded and well-represented: Aaron Tveit (known for his recurring role in Gossip Girl and many Broadway performances) as Danny Zuko, Julianne Hough (known for her breakout role in Footloose and two-time professional champion of Dancing With the Stars) as Sandy Young, Vanessa Hudgens (known for portraying Gabriella Montez in the High School Musical trilogy) as Betty Rizzo, and Carly Rae Jepsen (known for her hit song Call Me, Maybe) as Frenchy.
A nice change from the 1978 version was the diverse casting. Keke Palmer, who played Marty Maraschino, sang “Freddy, My Love” beautifully and brought life to an otherwise unmemorable character. Jordan Fisher (Doody) stole the show with his ballad “Those Magic Changes.” Seeing the girls from the live audience swoon was a nice touch.
Vanessa Hudgens received much praise for her incredible performance of “There are Worse Things I Could Do.” The song was made all the more memorable with the knowledge that her father had passed away the night before due to cancer. On Twitter, she said she would dedicate her performance to her father. Later, Fox announced that the entire show would be dedicated to Greg Hudgens. #teary
During the performance, you might have noticed a few familiar faces. Didi Conn, the original Frenchy, played the waitress Vi who gives Frenchy advice after she drops out of high school. Conn passing the so-called torch to Jepsen added a sentimental moment. Boyz II Men took the place of Frankie Avalon, who sang the iconic song “Beauty School Dropout.” Their harmonies were quite impressive along with their awkward old man shuffling.
The Grease: Live crew also received much praise. From the amazing costumes and sets to preparing for the worst, the crew was ready for anything. Aside from a few microphone glitches and the twenty seconds in the Hand Jive scene when the sound went out, the performance was pulled off magnificently.
Something Grease: Live had that no other live performance did: a live audience. While there were mixed reviews, overall the audience was received well. It made the high school seem more high school-y during the cheerleading tryouts, the pep rally, and the dance scene. Plus, inviting a hundred some Grease fans to a live performance is a sweet thought.
Julianne Hough’s dancing was incredibly fun, and she blew away the folks at home with “Hopelessly Devoted to You.” Twitter blew up over Aaron Tveit’s short-shorts. Carlos PenaVega (Kenickie) accidentally kissed Vanessa Hudgens. Also, a golf cart, which the cast used to get from set to set, almost toppled over which just goes to show what can happen during a live performance. All in all, it was a great performance with great people who were having a great time. Look forward to more TV musicals, and also look forward to getting Grease: Live on DVD. And never forget: Grease is the word!
