Former WWE icon Chyna dead at 46

Pro wrestling icon Chyna was found dead in her Redondo Beach home on Wednesday. The cause of death is being treated as an overdose at this hour, but an autopsy will be performed within the next two days, and toxicology reports will return within the coming weeks to confirm.

Anthony Anzaldo, her business manager, said she was found in her apartment that afternoon. She was 46. After police arrived at the scene, it was confirmed that Chyna, who’s real name is Joan Marie Laurer, was dead prior to being found by her friend.

Chyna was a trailblazer for all women competitors in the WWE. She billed herself as “The 9th Wonder of the World” due to her large frame and overly built physique. She was a member of the popular faction, DX, where she chartered most of her recognition. She often wrestled against men and once won the Intercontinental Championship, being the first and only woman to reach such an accomplishment. After leaving the WWE in 2001, she went on to become an actress, a best-selling author, and a teacher of English to kids in Japan.

The wrestling industry is notorious for creating stars, but losing the people behind the persona. Shawn Michaels, Kevin Nash, Randy Orton, you name it, they’ve all fallen victim to the dark hole beyond the ring. Chyna was no exception. After leaving the world of wrestling, Chyna spiraled into drug and alcohol abuse. Yesterday, she joined the long list of wrestlers who died young, including Rick Rude, Curt Hennig, the Ultimate Warrior, and Owen Hart.

People in the world of wrestling expressed shock and sadness over her shocking death.
