Failure to Launch, a Rom-Com starring a young Matthew McConaughey and Sarah Jessica Parker is an excellent and hilarious movie with a twist that you would never expect (Spoilers Ahead!). Produced by director Tom Dey, and written by Tom J. Astle as well as Matt Ember, Failure to launch released in 2006 and is rated PG-13. Tripp (Matthew McConaughey), is 35 years old, has a good job, and great friends. There’s only one problem, he still lives with his parents, played by Kathy Bates and Terry Bradshaw. They have had enough of Tripp living with them so they try to get him to leave by hiring someone to have him fall in love with, Paula (Sarah-Jessica Parker). Standard Rom-Com activities ensue with funny gags and interesting characters, until she starts to actually catch feelings for him and he gets closer to finding out the truth about her. In my opinion, the best part of the movie isn’t even the main characters but a subplot with Paula’s roommate, Kit. There is a mockingbird outside her window that won’t stop making noises, so the entire movie she is trying to get rid of it. There are really no boring parts of the movie, no filler or fat at all. It all is very purposeful. Things that seem like small details at the beginning tie into the ending of the story. Overall a very enjoyable movie, but a little formulaic. I’d give this an 8/10.
