DCSC welcomes new resource officer
Many students are probably wondering about the police officer that’s been roaming around our school. Well, for those who don’t know, a resource officer’s job in a school is to deal with the crime and safety in the school. They respond to and prevent any possible issues that arise during a school day.
The student resource officer (SRO) that was hired by DCSC is Officer Sharon Calles. She is responsible for the safety of the whole school corporation. Even when the school is having a peaceful day, Officer Calles is busy ensuring the safety of everyone in the school system. She goes to all DCSC buildings daily.
Officer Calles has many goals throughout the day. Her job is more than just “locking doors.” She had to review the current safety plans and also recommend changes. Then she also enforces state and local laws and also answers any questions about the law for students or families.
“DSCS hired a school resource officer to add another layer of safety for our students. A school resource officer acts as a liaison between the school and law enforcement giving us a proactive approach to situations that normally would have to require a call to the police but now can be handled within the building,” Mrs. Circle said.
In the state of Indiana, it is not mandated that a school must have an SRO; however, DCSC took advantage of a grant being offered by the Indiana Department of Homeland Security. The grants are given to help promote better school security.
