Delphi has been honored to host three foreign exchange students this year. These girls were all eager to learn the American way and have enjoyed their time here so far. Meet Hanna, Maria, and Valeria.
1. Where are you from?
I’m from Hannover,Germany.
2. What family are you staying with?
I’m staying with the Hoss family.
3. What do you miss most from your home country?
Of course I kind of miss my family and my friends, but I don’t feel homesick. I think the thing I miss the most is that over here I can’t just leave my house to walk or take my bike to get to the next grocery store or to a friend’s house. You depend more on others, but I can’t complain. I think I am more the burden for the people who always have to pick me up.
4. What do you like most about America so far?
I like the most that I have met many people that are really nice and make me feel home and to be honest, I really like the food. I feel like I’m eating all the time. I also like that if you go to sports meets (I do cross country, which I really like), everyone, even if they are from a different school, supports you. I haven’t seen this in Germany.
5. What surprised you about America when you arrived here?
The first thing I remember that surprised me, was the size of the drinks. It was seriously too much for me.
6. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like spending my free time with my (host)family, just talking, sitting around the campfire, cooking, eating, watching movies or drawing.
7. Do you have any siblings at home?
In Germany I have two brothers (19 &24) and one sister (22). My oldest brother already moved out and all of them are in university.
8. What do you do to get rid of homesickness?
I didn’t really get homesick so far, but I think it definitely helps to do sports because you don’t have so much free time that you could spend thinking about your family and friends at home.
9. What is something interesting about you?
Interesting about me might be…that I really like learning languages. I can speak German(my native language), English (8 years at school), French (5 years at school), some Spanish (3 years at school), a little bit of Latin (just translating, 1 year at school) and a little bit of Korean (started learning at home 1 year ago). And I really like to eat, although I maybe do not look like that.
1. Where are you from?
Denmark
2. What family are you staying with?
The Calloni family (Jennifer, Jeffrey, Bryanna, and Bethany)
3. What do you miss most from your home country?
My family and the healthy bread.
4. What do you like most about America so far?
The people are not as judging as they are back home. They are kind.
5. What surprised you about America when you arrived here?
It is a different environment out in the country than it is back home.
6. What do you like to do in your free time?
Sports and being together with my friends and very sweet family.
7. Do you have any siblings at home?
Yes, two older brothers, Mikael and Jakob.
8. What do you do to get rid of homesickness?
I talk to my host sister, Bryanna, which is the best sister you could wish for.
9. What is something interesting about you?
I’m very shy, but when you start to get to know me, I‘m very weird and love making people laugh.
1. Where are you from?
Milan, Italy.
2. What family are you staying with?
The Cripe family.
3. What do you miss most from your home country?
Just my parents a little bit, but not even that much.
4. What do you like most about America so far?
The easygoing lifestyle.
5. What surprised you about America when you arrived here?
Everyone is friendly and open-minded.
6. What do you like to do in your free time?
I like listening to music, hanging out with my friends, going to the movies, watching TV and reading.
7. Do you have any siblings at home?
Yes. I have a 23 year old sister.
8. What do you do to get rid of homesickness?
I am actually not homesick…so I don’t even have to worry about that.
9. What is something interesting about you?
I sing and I am in Entertainers. I would like to come back here for college and I really think I am coming back and going to IU to take foreign languages and something related to business. I’ve always loved the US and my plan is to live and work here one day.
