Oracle Baseball off to a hot start
Baseball season is well underway and the Delphi varsity squad is off to a hot start. The Oracles, under second year head coach Ryan Long, currently hold a stout regular season record of 11-2 and are ranked tenth in the IHSAA class 2A poll. Delphi has had the convenience of strong leadership from a core group of seniors and a very well-rounded coaching staff.
For the season itself, the Oracles have been on an offensive barrage outscoring its opponents in runs 122-52. Delphi possesses a team batting average of .315 and has stolen an impressive 44 bases. However, aside from early success, the road to the postseason will only get tougher. The Oracle’s first true test will come this week as they take on the number one ranked Knights of Lafayette Central Catholic. Catholic, under long time head coach Tim Bordenet, have notched an impressive 17-1 regular season record.
Despite recent history between these two sectional opponents, Delphi is optimistic about the upcoming challenge. With Central Catholic taking the last meeting, the 10th ranked Oracles look to avenge that sectional semi-final loss. However, Coach Long knows his team will need to put out a perfect effort. Catholic averages less than one error per game and has also greatly outscored its opponents this year. The matchup will be on the road for Delphi this Wednesday, May 3, with a 5:30 p.m. start time.
