U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team takes this season by storm

On July 5, 2015, the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT) made history once again as they won their third World Cup.

The USWNT defeated Japan 5-2. Carli Lloyd accomplished a hat-trick, scoring three goals. Two of those goals were scored within the first five minutes of the game and then amazingly another at the fifteen minute mark from the midline. Lauren Holiday and Tobin Heath each scored the other two U.S. goals.

A significant exchange occurred between Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd when Wambach entered her last World Cup game. Christie Rampone and Wambach were the captains for the season, but they did not have much playing time in the tournament’s games, so Lloyd happily accepted the position. When Wambach came off the bench in the final match, Lloyd took the time to hand off her captain’s armband and give it to the veteran player.

In the closing ceremony, awards were handed out to a number of players. Goalkeeper, Hope Solo, won the Golden Glove award, and midfielder, Carli Lloyd, received the Golden Ball award.

After all of the excitement of the World Cup win settled, the team was able to relax, but only for an instant. As of last Tuesday, August 16, the USWNT is back out on the field for their Victory Tour. They played Costa Rica in Pittsburgh, PA and then again in Chattanooga, TN on Thursday. The team’s next stop is Detroit where they will face Australia on September 17.

Recently FIFA chose members for their Women’s World Cup All-Star Squad. Carli Lloyd, Megan Rapinoe, Julie Johnston, Meghan Klingenberg, and Hope Solo were picked to represent the U.S.

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team has had an impressive year, and the next major test of the team is the 2016 Summer Olympics.
