Think warm thoughts (and other suggestions)
As leaves turn orange, stores decorate with pumpkins and candles, and winter approaches slowly, clothes return to the spotlight as the fall styles blow in. In the balance between fashion and comfort, how to stay warm is always floating in the back of everyone’s minds. Here are some tips on staying warm in this cold weather and even colder school.
Living in Indiana, we know that the mornings are significantly cooler than after school. To avoid freezing in the morning, wear cute layers! Neutral color cardigans and jean jackets add to an outfit without taking away much of the focus off the shirt you’re already wearing. Giant scarves also keep your neck warm while allowing you to add a vibrant part of your personality.
Closed-toed shoes keep your body heat from escaping, so wear boots, Converse, or Vans. These shoes come in all sorts of patterns and colors enabling you to be creative! With your shoes, get a fun pair of socks to provide an extra toasty layer. I suggest fuzzy socks or socks with cartoon animals to brighten your day and heat you from the inside-out.
Let’s be real, not every day is fashion day. When you feel ‘off fleek’, sweatpants are the way to go. For those of us who can’t escape skinny jeans, soccer-style sweatpants are the cozy version that need to be recognized. On our off-fashion day, sweatshirts optimize warmth. Brand names such as Pink and Under Armour offer comfy and attractive hoodies. High-neck pullovers are also on the rise, which keep the most cold-sensitive part of the body covered.
Friends are always there to give a shoulder to lean on, but they also can provide comfort in the winter months. If you forget a jacket, the odds are that one of your friends would lend you one. If that doesn’t work, try penguining, where a group of people huddle together for warmth and protection. You could also always walk around saying, “Hi, I like warm hugs.” That method may work, but I haven’t tested it. And even if all else fails, remember being cold actually burns calories, so at least you can get a workout.

I like the suggestion of penguining. I have tried it and it worked decently well.
