The movie Overlord, starring Mathilde Ollivier, Wyatt Russell, and Jovan Adepo, is a horror/action film set right before the D-Day invasion on Nazi-occupied France, their mission, take out the radio tower on top of a church, but what lies underneath it is something… supernatural. Releasing in 2018, and directed by Julius Avery, who also directed The Pope’s Exorcist. The day before the Normandy invasion, a squadron of American bombers headed on a mission to take out a radio tower the Germans placed on top of a church right next to a French village. When the mission goes south only 4 members survive to get to the village. While one of the men gets lost in the lab under the church, he finds disturbing experiments, where the town’s population were being turned into zombies with unnatural strength. They’re mission just became a little more complicated. I personally enjoyed 2/3rds of this film. The SS officer was terrifying and the suspense was great, up until one scene. The SS officer got shot in the face so not wanting to die he injects himself with the zombie serum and then smiles at the camera with half his face missing. It was a really cheesy and goofy thing, which would be fine in a more goofy action movie but compared to the rest of the movie, it was kind of like tonal whiplash. After that it’s just goofy action movie stuff. Another thing I would have liked to see was them explaining more about how the serum works. It’s good to leave it’s origins a little open ended, letting the audience think what they want about it, but other than a few little lines it doesn’t go into really anything about it, it just exists. Other than that, it builds up tension solidly, and it uses some jump-scares but they don’t feel cheap or out of place, so with that I’d give it a solid 7/10. Not a movie I’d re-watch, but enjoyable.
