I bet you all know who Thor is. You know, the God of Thunder, Hammer Mjolnir, “Should’ve gone for the Head”, Chris Hemsworth. I bet you also know who Loki is. He tried to take over the Earth with an alien army, has his own TV show on Disney Plus, “Puny God”-Hulk, Avengers 2012. Well, I’m not sad to tell you that those portrayals are completely inaccurate compared to how the Pros Edda describes Thor and Loki. You may be wondering what the “Pros Edda” is? It is a collection of Scandinavian myths and poems that make up Norse Mythology that was written by Snorri Sturluson. In the Pros Edda, Thor is described to be a red head, has two gauntlets called Jarngreipr, which he wields to control the power of Mjolnir, and owns a belt called Megingjord that grants him strength to lift Mjolnir.
You don’t have to be “worthy” to lift Mjolnir like Thor, Vision, and Captain America are. Mjolnir is just extremely heavy and doesn’t grant it’s wielder Thor’s powers. Loki isn’t Thor’s adapted brother, but rather he is actually Odin’s blood brother. Also, Loki is more of a frenemy to Thor and the Norse Gods than a full time villain. One of these examples is that when Thor’s hammer was stolen by a frost giant named Thrym, Loki is credited with helping the giant steal the hammer. Yet, he helps Thor get it back by dressing up Thor in a bridal dress to trick Thyrm into thinking that Thor is the goddess Freya.
Many think Hades is “evil” due to being the god of the underworld and dead. When actually, he’s one, if not the most, passive god in Greek mythology. While the other gods were busy having affairs left and right, transforming humans into monsters and putting curses on them for petty reasons, Hades was more concerned with keeping the underworld in order and making sure the souls of the dead are kept in check and don’t escape. He also seeks to bring sinners who have wronged others in their life to justice by sentencing them to the fields of punishment and having the Furies drive them mad for their misdoings. Movies like “Clash of the Titans” and “Immortals” always fall on false Greek Mythology stereotypes when actually if they studied and read the stories, they can make actual good movies with interesting stories instead of repeating the same story methods that are used time after time.
