In today’s world, there are a variety of games, television programs, and entertainment sources on the internet to choose from, such as YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok. It is becoming more common for people to be addicted to these forms of entertainment. Many people say it is because they are lazy, but I believe that there is a deeper reason for these actions. Reality can be cruel, and some have it rougher than others. With one’s economical, social, and family background it can be all too much for the average person to take in day after day. For instance, one person may become very nervous very fast which leads to stress for that individual, while another person may have trouble with his or her family such as a family member in jail, unemployment, or an abusive figure in one’s life. This leads people to resent and hate reality, hesitant to wake up, hesitant to go to school/work, or hesitant to even go home.
Yet, when people are immersed in their games or entertainment, the worries of the world seem to melt off their minds into their forgotten memories. Fiction and entertainment is a coping mechanism that allows us to handle the burdens and challenges we face in everyday life. For instance, if someone is having a bad day for whatever reason, just going home and playing their favorite video game or watching their favorite show can greatly determine their moods for the rest of the day. It is this happiness we find in these abstracts of reality that draws us so close to them they give us a pleasure in life or a feeling of genuine happiness. The characters and worlds also play a huge part in helping one to escape the mind space of their homes and into the world of which they love so much, with characters they admire and relate to. Many people fear the world and the many dangers and challenges it holds so finding a world where you feel like you can express yourself through fictional protagonists can help to ease the dread of everyday life.
