Did YouTube Rewind even experience 2018?

The 2018 YouTube Rewind has sparked backlash from YouTubers and viewers alike. Many criticize it as being disconnected from the public.

As per usual, YouTube has recently released its yearly YouTube Rewind, Everyone Controls Rewind, and viewers have quickly voiced their opinions of it. Having so far garnered over 140 million views at the time this article was written, the video has also taken a dismal 13 million dislikes, making it the most disliked video posted in history.

The video was one of the most inclusive of its kind, featuring the Fortnite Battle Bus, Will Smith, K-Pop, Baby Shark, and of course, the all popular Walmart Yodeling Kid. But with all of these cultural phenomenons, why has the public view been so depressing? What was this year’s YouTube rewind missing, and what shouldn’t it have included?

  1. School Shootings:

While the Rewinds are mainly a mass of culture summaries for the year, YouTube Rewinds past haven’t been afraid to broach big topics. Last year, the Rewind showcased YouTubers holding hand in solidarity to bring change to community, and helping each others in time of need. However, in wake of one of the worst years safety wise for students (who are also YouTube’s biggest demographic), not a thing was said about the shootings. Dozens of media outlets called these shootings out, and even if you don’t agree with the politics behind it, you’d think YouTube would put some tribute in there to the kids who lost their lives.

  1. The Box Office:

2018 has been a giant year for the box office, with hits like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Incredibles 2, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom topping the charts. Yet none of these film made even the hint of an appearance during the Rewind. Fans have flocked to theaters around the world to see these movie, and if anything, the current year has made them all the more excited for next year. However, YouTube snubbed the popular films, and an excellent opportunity with cameos from some great actors was missed.

  1. The People:

2018 has seen many great faces leave this earth. As a video that celebrates “people … that defined 2018,” many more than just YouTubers and pop cultural icons should have been on there. First off, since it was a YouTube video, there were a couple YouTubers who should have been on there. PewDiePie, as well as Logan Paul, were two influential YouTubers who, for better or worse, were missed by many of the viewers. The video didn’t even showcase the 6-year old who made $11 million dollars on YouTube, Ryan ToysReview.

Besides the influential YouTubers, 2018 saw a loss of many significant faces. Political pundits like George H.W. Bush and John McCain, iconic creators such as Stan Lee, Avicii, and Aretha Franklin, and great minds such as Stephen Hawking or Billy Graham didn’t even get recognized. And let’s not even go into those who became viral this year.

While the description for YouTube Rewind says, “Celebrating the videos, people, music and moments that defined 2018,” it doesn’t come anywhere close to that. If a video’s aim is to celebrate the whole of 2018, then it must make way for people and events that aren’t necessarily a part of what they think is popular. YouTube aimed this year, but missed sorely.
