Anyone who hasn’t been living under a rock has heard of the classic 90’s and 2000’s rock bands, Nirvana debatably being one of the most known names for the category. This iconic band has likely inspired hundreds of others, one of which playing for our very own Delphi Community High School Choir Concerts. This isn’t the only inspiration behind the band, others being things such as more musical artists, family members, and music within itself.
The band itself, however, consists of high school students and, more than likely, familiar faces including: Jaden Turner “Lead Singer,” Harrison Bernfield “Drummer,” Serenity McTigue “Bassist,” Annie Mills “Guitarist,” Willow Clark “Guitarist/Vocalist,” and Jaden Herr “Manager.” They refer to themselves as “Out Of Mind,” and have performed for the concerts for over a year.
Their first show was at a DCHS choir concert back in February of 2023, on Valentine’s Day. At the moment, Out Of Mind plays for DCHS at the choir concerts (they hope to see you at the next one!), parties, and small gigs. In the future they hope to play for local businesses. The band plays music that is full of grunge, and falls into the category of 90’s to 2000’s rock. They have several inspirations for their works including: Nirvana, “the soul of music,” Willow’s brother and his band, and Annie’s dad. The members are in the process of learning 10 new songs, and have their very own gig coming up later this month.
The dynamic of the performers is one of playfulness and joy, and that fact can be made apparent based solely on the stories told, and their own views of their experiences with the band. One member states things such as the other members being “built-in best friends,” and says that the band is “doing my favorite things with my favorite people.” Another member mentions the pact along each person of the band to, when they each turn 18, get matching tattoos.
The interview was a good time, full of laughter and conversation, and the band mentioned several topics, including favorite colors, which ones they’d pick to dye their hair, and even favorite hobbies (art, painting, drawing, running, and fashion).
They even provided several anecdotes, reminiscing on Jaden’s first practice, where he had been tasked with singing “Next Year” by Foo Fighters and misread the lyric as “I’m in the night tonight,” rather than, “I’m in the sky tonight.” The story, while at the time, might have been embarrassing, it is now a silly story that the band regards as one of their favorite memories. Now, the one thing they hope to leave you, the audience with, is that they are indeed, in the night tonight.
