Riots follow Ferguson shooting
On Aug. 9 in Ferguson, Missouri, a police officer shot an unarmed teenager named Michael Brown. The police said that Michael, 18, tried to attack the police officer. The officer also claimed that Brown tried to reach for the officer’s gun.
As word of the teen’s death spread, there was a candlelight vigil to honor Brown. The police reported that more than a dozen businesses were robbed and looted during the vigil. More than 30 people were arrested and two police officers were injured, according to police reports. The police departments surrounding the area were given many threats and some schools closed on the following Monday as a result of those threats . People gathered around the police station to demand justice for Brown.
The FBI announced that they would be doing a separate investigation. The county, Brown’s parents, and The Department of Justice all have conducted autopsies to see if any of his civil rights had been violated.
There was some peaceful protesting before the riots started. Many protesters gathered outside of the St. Louis Police Department and gave a list of demands regarding Brown’s case. Many churches in the area also demanded justice for Michael.
The protesting started to get violent just three days after the shooting when more looting occurred and nine people were arrested.
President Obama released a statement following the Brown shooting. He sent his condolences to the Brown family. When the rioting was heating up, the police used tear gas, and wooden and rubber bullets on large crowds. President Obama released another statement: “I know the events of the past few days have prompted strong passions, but as details unfold, I urge everyone in Ferguson, Missouri, and across the country, to remember this young man through reflection and understanding. We should comfort each other and talk with one another in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds.”
More nights of violence continued as 16 people were arrested and two more officers were injured by the fourth night of protests. But most people across the country held silent vigils while the violence in Ferguson continued. Many Missouri State Troopers marched peacefully with citizens, and for the first time in days, no violence was reported by the fifth night.
It wasn’t until the following Friday, Aug. 15, that the name of the officer who shot Brown was released, Officer Darren Wilson. WIlson had been on the police force for six years and never had any disciplinary action against him. The police officer and his family have gone into hiding due to the many death threats against him.
On the day of the shooting, details of the day’s events slowly were revealed. The officers were alerted of a robbery in the area, moments before Michael was shot. At first the police chief said nothing about Brown being tied to the robbery when they released the officer’s name. But when the reports of the robbery were released, Brown was listed as a possible suspect.
In the next few hours, many police officers spoke out with hope for more peaceful protesting, but a short while later eyewitnesses were able to place Brown at the robbery. His family was “beyond outraged” at this statement, according to many reports. The police also released that Officer Darren Wilson didn’t know of the suspected robbery when Michael Brown was shot. That night, violent protesting started again. Nearly 200 protesters clashed with police and their armoured vehicles. More tear gas was dispersed throughout the crowd. Ferguson was put into a state of emergency.
More than a week and many violent protests later, the autopsy revealed Brown was shot six times. This brought more violence and protests. The governor of Missouri called in the National Guard as protesters threw Molotov cocktails (homemade bombs), looted more businesses, and tried to create roadblocks to stop police. The National Guard was given limited responsibilities in the protesting, meaning they were only to give help at night.
More than four weeks after the shooting, the protesting has gone peaceful. It hasn’t yet been decided if the officer will be charged for the death of Michael Brown. The Grand Jury is likely to release a statement in the next few days.
