Jonathan Ferrell, former A&M Florida football player, was tasered to death on Saturday, Sept. 14 by a police officer who approached the scene believing Ferrell was attempting to rob a home.
Ferrell had crashed his car just a few blocks away in Charlotte, North Carolina. He struck a tree and then had to climb out of the back windows and then run to the nearest house for help. Once he reached a house, he furiously knocked on the door to try and awaken the homeowners inside.
The woman who owned the house thought it was her husband arriving home from work at 2:00 AM, but when she opened the door to Ferrell, she quickly hit her panic button which called 911.
He continued to get her attention. When the police arrived on the scene, Ferrell ran to the police to get help. Three police believed he was armed. Officer Randall Kendrick shot 24-year old Jonathan Ferrell with his taser several times. Ferrell died at the scene
Officer Kendrick turned himself in that afternoon and was released on a $50.000 bond. He has been charged with voluntary manslaughter and all three officers have been put on paid release.
Many of Ferrell’s friends and family have expressed their grief through social media and are demanding justice for the death of their loved one.
