Through recent months of turmoil in the Middle East, specifically Syria, the American government and Russian officials have been convening over any possible route to take that could solve the problem at hand, the chemical weapons attacks currently being targeted at Syrian civilian populations.
President Obama had met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to talk about a possible American military strike against Syrian military targets. Putin has been more reluctant to talk over such military strikes as Obama. Syria has welcomed the Russian’ proposal, which Obama sees as a step toward fixing the problem at hand, but not the continued civil war that still rages across the country. Any aspirations made by the United States to go ahead with this raid have been put to the side with the recent breakthrough in relations by the Russians.
The Russian’s proposal is that of a peaceful, yet decisive, plan that includes Syrian officials handing over all chemical weapons to international control. This will help to quell the more devastating of the crimes being committed by the Syrian government and revolutionary factions.
Other UN nations have been more reluctant to jump to a military course of action. The course set by the Russian officials has been the only peaceful plan to have made it past the drawing board. The Syrians are at least considering these terms that have been presented, which means the path toward a peaceful and diplomatic solution has started in its infancy.
President Obama had planned a public appearance to try and win over more of the public with his plan for a military strike, but after the Russian’s recent diplomatic activity with Syrian officials Obama had to stall his call for arms and convert it to more of a press release. Obama went on after his appearance to ask Congress to wait before taking an official vote on whether to go ahead with the strike or not.
