Starting this year, students have had the opportunity to join specific power hours. One of the available power hours with Mr. Reich is Ground School Training, or in simpler terms; piloting 101. I will be attending this power hour for the second nine weeks and wanted to see what I would be getting myself into, along with allowing others to gain a view into a possible new power hour for them. So, I gave Mr. Reich a list of questions, and here were his responses-
- What made you want to teach this power hour?
- We were told to teach something that we enjoy/interests us. I find aviation fascinating and it can open up possible careers.
- What do you find the most interesting about aviation?
- I think it’s amazing that we (humans) have learned how to take a metal object and make it fly! It seems like magic, but it is really science….and I love science.
- What do the students get to do week by week in your power hour?
- Students can watch “ground school” videos about basic aviation information that can be helpful if students decide to pursue aviation and get a private pilot license.
Students can also use a flight simulator to learn how to fly a plane in Microsoft Flight Simulator.
Once I get some funds from a partnership with Republic Airlines, I hope to take students on a field trip down to Indianapolis International Airport and/or Purdue’s Airport.
- Would you recommend this power hour to students next year?
- If you are interested in learning more about aviation, I would recommend this Power Hour.
- Roughly what percent of students in your class want to pursue an aviation-related career?
- Roughly 33%, but the first nine weeks is the smallest class of the four nine weeks.
- What is your favorite part of your power hour?
- I like to watch the students learn to read the gauges and learn the basics of how to control a plane.
