Emma Watson to star as Belle

Lately, turning favorite fairy-tales into live-action movies has become a trend, and it doesn’t seem to be stopping: Alice in Wonderland in 2010, Mirror Mirror in 2012, Maleficent in 2014, and Cinderella which will be released in March of 2015. The next movie to be brought to life? A classic favorite, Beauty and the Beast. On Monday, Jan. 26, Emma Watson announced on Facebook that she would be playing the role of Belle in the new live-action Beauty and the Beast.

“I’m finally able to tell you…that I will be playing Belle in Disney’s new live-action ‘Beauty and the Beast’! It was such a big part of my growing up, it almost feels surreal  that I’ll get to dance to ‘Be Our Guest’ and sing ‘Something There’. My 6-year-old self is on the ceiling — heart bursting. Time to start some singing lessons. I can’t wait for you to see it,” said Watson in her post on Facebook.

The original Beauty and the Beast, which was released in 1991, was the first animated feature to be nominated for a best picture Oscar. It was also the first animated Disney film to be turned into a Broadway musical in 1994. Now, it gets to be brought back to the big-screen in live-action.

Emma Watson was first set to play Belle in a live-action Beauty and the Beast back in 2011. However, the director, Guillermo del Toro, was replaced by Bill Condon, and the original company set to produce it, Warner Bros., has been replaced by Walt Disney Studios. The script was written by Stephen Chbosky, author of The Perks of Being a Wallflower. Filming is set to begin later this year, and there is no set release date yet.
