On Nov. 12 the D.A.R.E. program was held in the elementary school for the fifth grade class. D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse Resistance Education), a program run by Detective Steve Mullin of the Carroll County sheriff’s office, is a drug prevention program that has been used by DCES for nearly 20 years. Each year, five high school students are chosen to be D.A.R.E. role models. This year’s role models are Bryer Houston, Kolby Myer, Emma Carpenter, Hannah Napier, and Adam Shanks.
The D.A.R.E. role models go to the elementary one afternoon to help spread the message of the importance of living a drug-free life. Following the presentation, they answer any questions that the fifth graders have.
“Being a D.A.R.E role model gave me the opportunity to make an impact on many young lives. If I am able to open one child’s eyes to the dangers of using drugs and alcohol, then my job as a D.A.R.E role model was accomplished,” said senior Bryer Houston.
