Delphi dance team begins competition season

Although most people know the dance team for their participation in football and basketball games, they also compete at various events. On Saturday, Dec. 3, the Delphi dance team competed in a Crawfordsville Invitational dance competition. This year’s coach, Alexis Smith, took a team of 12 to compete in the invitational, which is the largest team she has ever coached.

At the beginning of the season, the team only had three returning members and three freshmen. Having 12 members is a big step for advancing the team, which was previously struggling to find members. This means that the team consists of mostly beginner dancers, putting the team in the Scholastic category for competition.

The team performed a two minute pom routine to a mash up of rock songs. They placed 3rd in their division. Coach Smith states, “We are excited for our new dancers, and we can’t wait to improve from here.” The team has a few more weeks to make improvements to their performance and add new techniques before the Crown Point Invitational competition Jan. 7th.

In addition to new members, the team also welcomes new assistant coach, Mrs. Angela Bieghler. She previously coached at Frontier High School, where she led her team to a state championship. She also was the head coach for Delphi from 2007-2011. With all of these new opportunities, the Delphi dance team is looking forward to a great start to the competition season.
