The Pixar theory proves Pixar as one universe
Caution: Contains spoilers. Read at your own risk!
“Every Pixar movie is connected. I can explain how, and possibly why.”
Starting with those words, blog writer and theorist Jon Negroni made his case for what may be one of the biggest movie theories of all time. AKA, The Pixar Theory.
So just what is The Pixar Theory? I’m going to try and give to you the bare basics of it in a short amount of time. If you want the entire theory, you can click here. (If the links don’t work at school, you can access them from home.)
1. How It All Started
The Pixar universe starts out with the movie The Good Dinosaur. Our universe could completely have been the same as Pixar’s universe, except for one cataclysmic event. The asteroid failed to crash into Earth, failing to make the dinosaurs disappear.
However, the dinosaurs later disappear because they are running out of resources, something evidenced in The Good Dinosaur. So eventually, we have man rising to power. However, the fact that the dinosaurs have died out more gradually does play a big part, which we’ll get to later.
2. Magic and the Unseen Energy
Yes, magic does work its way into The Pixar Theory, but not in the way you’d think. First, let’s start off with where the magic came from. Do you remember the will-o-the-wisps from Brave? Well, those are thought to be the source of the magic. The witch from Brave is obviously connected to them, and she turns out to be one of the most important people in The Pixar Universe.
Actually, the magic is one of the key reasons as to why toys and machines have gained life basically. It’s more like an unseen energy that exists in wavelengths. It is also thought to radiate off the humans.
3. Animals, Machines and Objects Gain Consciousness
Okay, this one is pretty obvious. The toys in Toy Story, the machines in The Incredibles and WALL-E, and the animals in like, every single Pixar movie have gained a sort of consciousness. In other words, they can vaguely understand and interact with humans. However, one of the main points of The Pixar Theory is that there is a growing disdain between all these three groups and humans.
Duh. Why wouldn’t there be? Humans are the most destructive, violent, and dirty species on the planet, just to name a few of our key unlikable qualities. And, because of that growing disdain, the machines decide to attack humanity. Not in broad daylight though, oh no. They do it by using a very key company called Buy ‘n Large.
4. Buy ‘n Large
There is this company who makes its first audience appearance in WALL-E. It’s called Buy ‘n Large, and they kind of control the whole world. Also, they kind of started the whole mess with all the pollution and whatnot. There’s also the fact that in The Pixar Theory, the whole company is run by machines. That’s right, those friendly machines out to get humans were also the ones who scheduled the “Operation: Cleanup” that sent humans way out into space.
This company’s progression into power is not instant. If you look throughout all of the Pixar movies, you can find a lot of references to this company. They’ve pretty much stamped their claim on everything, leading to their power, and thus began the whole quest of leading the humans away from Earth. This is also the reason why Autopilot in WALL-E tries to stop the humans from going back to Earth. Machines. If they aren’t helping ya, they’re plotting your destruction. At least in this case.
5. The One Special Girl
The final key point The Pixar Theory has to make is the one special girl who may just be the most important person in the entire Pixar universe. Otherwise known as, Boo. That’s right, the cute little girl from Monsters Inc. is one of the most key people in this theory. But wait, didn’t I say that the witch from Brave was the most important person? Well, you may have heard this from tons of other theories, but Boo and the witch are none other than the same person.
I know, shocker. I won’t bore you with the details, but essentially Boo has figured out a way to travel back through time, using the doors from Monsters Inc. So she travels all throughout time using this sort of “energy” (sound familiar?) to find her long lost friend, “Kitty”. AKA, Sulley.
The theory states that Boo learned that the source of the energy (or magic) originated from the Scottish forest in Brave, so she travels back in time there to study the energy/magic. (It’s proved that the witch is Boo because of the Sulley carving spotted in the witch’s cabin.)
I know, it’s really confusing. My head is spinning just writing this.
I also would like to point out that legendary Pixar director, Pete Docter (Inside Out, Monsters Inc., Up), has put out there that there is no “one universe” for Pixar movies. “For me, that kind of breaks my brain, to think that they – I think of them as very different universes and that they don’t cross over.”
For all you people not buying it, Jon Negroni does say quite frequently that “The point of this theory is to have fun and exercise your imagination while simultaneously finding interesting connections between these fantastic movies. The trick is to not take any of it too seriously.” So there you have it. Just enjoy the theory.
