DCHS English department presents A Celebration of Self Through the Arts

The DCHS English department has hosted the This I Believe essay writing contest for the past five years. However, this year, they are trying something new. “This I Believe originated because we wanted to give students a chance to reflect and to be heard,” said Mrs. Tonsoni. “The program has been wonderfully successful; however, we want to keep it fresh, so we decided to alternate This I Believe with a new program called “A Celebration of Self Through the Arts.” Instead of every student having to write an essay, students will be able to submit short stories, write poetry, perform spoken word poetry, sing, play an instrument, dance, or create 2D/3D art. The new initiative still allows students to express themselves, but in ways other than just writing. All students must submit an assignment for English class, and then those interested have the opportunity to submit their work to a panel of judges. Only a few entries from each category will be chosen for the community event.  All projects are due Monday, Feb. 6, tryouts are Thursday, Feb. 16 at 5:30 in the Little Theater, and the program is Tuesday, March 7 at the Delphi Opera House starting at 6:30.
