With the Fire on High

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo is another one of this year’s Rosie nominees. The novel follows our main character, Emoni Santiago, a senior in high school with a daughter to care for. She is constantly stressed about what she needs to do for her daughter and to help support her abuela who she lives with. However, the one place that she can let everything go is in the kitchen. She knows she doesn’t have time for her school’s culinary class and knows she doesn’t have the money in order to go on the sponsored trip to Spain and she shouldn’t be day dreaming about being a chef one day. But that doesn’t stop her from going after what she wants and letting her talent grow. For the most part, I really enjoyed this book. The author has a very unique way of writing that captures the reader. (4.22/5 stars on Goodreads)
