Earth Science students earn certification in weather watching

Mrs. Tice’s first and third period Earth Science classes are currently going through an online program to become SKYWARN Storm Spotters, or certified weather watchers. This certification will allow the students to call in weather events such as flooding, tornados, hail size, and wildfires to the National Weather Service. The program will be completed before spring break so that the students will be certified for tornado season in the spring. Mrs. Tice decided to add this program to the curriculum for the first time this year, stating, “Getting the certification gives a purpose to our weather unit, and it gives them a chance to kind of stick their toes in the water of what a meteorologist would do.” Being a certified weather watcher will allow the students to better understand the weather so they can help keep their families and community safe by calling in dangerous weather events.
