On the Come Up

On the Come Up

On the Come Up by Angie Thomas is another Rosie book this year that follows the perspective of our main character Bri. Bri is 16 years old and wants to follow in her father’s footsteps of becoming a rapper. However, when life throws all kinds of curve balls at her: her mom losing her job unexpectedly, eviction notices, and bills piling up, she starts to feel the need to make it instead of wanting to make it. I was hesitant to read this book after the intense dislike I had for The Hate U Give, another of Angie Thomas’ books, and due to that mindset, I’m not surprised to say that this book was not my favorite. I’ve never been fond of rap music. In fact, I find myself skipping those songs, so reading about a girl wanting to be a rapper who keeps making fandom references doesn’t really vibe with me.
