The Hate U Give

The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas has been classified as a banned book or a challenged book, making it the perfect book to read for Banned Books Week! According to Mrs. Tonsoni, it was one of the most highly circulated books last school year. However, this is not one of my favorite books. It follows the main character, Starr, and is written from her perspective. Starr is a black girl on her way home from a party with one of her best friends, and on the way home, they get pulled over by a white policeman and her best friend is shot. I think Starr was very single-minded throughout the book and didn’t think about the other side of the story. This was supposed to be a race inclusive novel, but in my opinion, it wasn’t. You don’t really get many varied opinions on the topic at all. There wasn’t much empathy or understanding for the policeman’s side, and I didn’t care for that. The LMC has multiple copies of The Hate U Give. Give it a read and see what you think, feel free to let me know.
