Chemistry class does a fiery lab

This past week, Mr. Danforth’s chemistry classes conducted a lab involving cotton swabs and multiple chemicals. The students, donning their appropriate safety equipment, dipped cotton swabs in multiple chemicals, such as potassium, bromine, and sulfur. They then held the cotton swabs over bunsen burners, and chemical reactions in color and smell would occur. Bright oranges, hot pinks, and fiery reds burst forth from the swabs as students were in complete awe. The purpose of said lab was to demonstrate the multitude of chemical reactions that can take place in our surroundings, and to expose the students to the light emission spectrum associated with chemicals.
