Cooper Cross’ Senate Page Experience
Recently, junior Cooper Cross had the opportunity to be an Indiana State Senate page. After hearing about the opportunity from his dad, Kyle Cross, Cooper applied and had the chance to go to the historical Indiana Statehouse (Capitol Building) in Indianapolis. There, he got a tour of the Statehouse, including the House and Senate Chambers, the Supreme Court, and the Governor’s office. Other than learning a lot about Indiana’s history, Cooper participated in a “Mock Bill” activity where alongside many other senate pages, he proposed, amended, and passed bills on the Senate floor. The highlight of the day was when Cooper was able to sit in on a legislative session directly from the floor of the Senate Chambers. He was also able to meet and have one-on-one conversations with Senator Buchanan, our district’s representative, and chat with him about how the Senate is protecting our freedoms in the digital age. On top of everything, Cooper was able to learn more about how the government works internally. He observed that it operated in a more friendly and positive environment than the media let on. Cooper noted, “I enjoyed the whole experience.”
