Senior Spotlight: Gabby Bruestle
This week’s senior spotlight is about Gabby Bruestle and her great achievements last Saturday in the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble State Finals. For those of you that don’t know much about this event, it is a state competition that the school’s choir and band both separately compete in. The first event or performance is the district competition and if you are able to get the gold you will move onto the state competition. In the district competition, Gabby performed a song in German named, “Lachen Und Weinen” from Schubert. Obviously Gabby was able to win the gold and advance. Gabby’s philosophy in the state competition was: If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, so she performed the same song, in German, and was able to get the gold, again, this time with distinction. For those of you wondering how these performances are scored, it is with a number system from 9 to 23, 9 being the best. Any score lower than 11 also has distinction honors. Gabby scored a 10, thus earning the distinction.
So what is it like on the day of an important voice competition? “I had some nerves. I usually try to over prepare and go in warm to make sure I won’t mess up. Usually my nerves are cooled by the middle of the performance. I’ve performed a lot, but I still get nervous. I just remind myself it’ll go well and practice breathing,” said Gabby. Her passion for singing started at a young age. “It’s fun. I’ve been working since I was 8 and performing has always been a thrill and something to work towards. Ever since I was itty bitty I had an affinity for music and singing,” she said.
Gabby is not ready to put an end to her singing career when she graduates this May. “I’m hoping to take a gap year to work on more music for college auditions, performing, producing, and auditioning for America’s Got Talent (AGT) and The Voice.”
