Senior Trevor Nethercutt prepares to deliver a speech. This year’s speech class will be the first to perform stand-up comedy in Mr. Mroczkiewicz’s time teaching the class.

Speech class tickles funny bone with stand-up comedy

The DCHS Speech class has conquered informative speeches, narrative speeches, and debates to name a few, and now plans to move on to a unique, yet still important, form of speech: stand-up comedy. Mr. Mroczkiewicz has been teaching speech for three years now, but this is the first year comedy skits have been added to the curriculum. “To break up the monotony, I try to figure out one off-the-wall speech during second semester,” said Mroczkiewicz. “I was watching a comedy special one evening with my wife, and the idea struck me.”

As the class has worked on these comedies, many have found them to be harder than they’ve expected. “I think they’re slightly scary because people in the class don’t have experience with this,” said senior Trevor Nethercutt. “Some people aren’t sure what direction they’ll go.” Nevertheless, the class is excited for the project. “I’m tempering expectations, but I think it will be a worthwhile and growing experience,” said Mroczkiewicz. “I’m genuinely excited.”
