Anatomy class takes on pig dissection unit

Mrs. Dennison’s anatomy classes are in the middle of their pig dissection unit. The unit lasts between four to six weeks and covers most aspects of the pig’s anatomy. Students cover the external anatomy first, then they move onto the internal aspects (muscles, organs, and blood vessels). The goal of the unit is to learn the locations and operations of different muscles and organs as well as how they compare to humans. In Ensley Circle’s opinion, “It’s pretty interesting and I’ve gotten pretty good at it. It’s still disgusting every day, though.” Exchange student Miles Bednarczyk said, “I enjoy this a lot. Cutting up pigs is fun. This is the kind of stuff we do in college [in Poland], only we do humans.” The pig dissection unit has been part of Mrs. Dennison’s anatomy curriculum for years and she strongly believes in its advantages: “If you plan on going into a medical career, anatomy gives you a really good foundation.”
