DCHS Staff Exclusive: The Wind Songs of Sleepy Hollow

If you’ve walked into the front doors of DCHS, you may have noticed the nearly 5.5 foot wind chime off to the side. Any time a breeze hits it, the metal tubes play a melodious sound. Delphi chemistry teacher Mr. Danforth has made a business out of making wind chimes. Along with his wife, Neta, and a hired hand, Mr. Danforth assembles and sells wind chimes as a professionally made local product.

“I’ve always been interested in owning my own business, but I wanted it to be something where I controlled my own inventory,” said Mr. Danforth. “I really enjoyed hearing wind chimes, so I looked up how to make some homemade ones. It turned out I loved making them, and I found out that making them using professionally finished parts was cheaper than making the unprofessionally finished local parts.” From there, the business blossomed. Now, the chemistry teacher/businessman sells strictly wholesale. “Right now, the business hasn’t gone as far as I think it could have, just because I’m working as a teacher now,” said Danforth. “But when I retire, who knows? The sky’s the limit.”
