Government elections teach students about politics
Although midterm elections have passed, students in Mr. Gilbert’s government classes have been trying their own hands at the campaign trail. It started when students took a simple test, which surveyed their views and aligned them with a party that holds similar views and principles. Based off of these results, students were grouped with people who shared their views. This included Democrats, Republicans, and, in one class, Libertarians. After they were grouped, they appointed a president and vice president to run against the other parties in an election. Students then made posters and commercials to encourage votes for their candidates. Vice-presidential and presidential candidates participated in a debate and then students voted for their candidate of choice. Drew Hollingsworth, Republican candidate from first hour government, commented, “[F]orming this campaign sort of educated me to a degree.” He further explained, “As a libertarian I seem to lose to true mindset of the GOP.”
