The Fab Five

Rarely does a group of five young players in a sport of any kind stick it out until their senior year, but that is exactly what Delphi has seen this year in girls’ basketball with Erika Carroll, Morgan Crowel, Tatum Minier, Danielle Swayze, and Myka Roth. These five girls, a.k.a. The Fab Five, who have compiled an impressive 58 wins in their high school career, have been playing basketball together since fourth grade. In their final season as The Fab Five, the girls reflected back on all of their memories and traditions and shed light on where each of their futures is taking them.

No group of people can continue to be as close as these five without developing some rituals and traditions. In seventh grade, Myka’s hair always flopped in her face during games. To remedy this, her dad bought her an Under Armour headband, which Myka hated immensely. These five teammates each bought one and wore them to make her feel better about wearing it, and all of them still wear them to this day.

But the traditions do not stop at headbands. Before each game, the girls recite the Lord’s prayer together. On game days, they wear socks in the respecting colors to the location: white for home and black for away. Every year since the seventh grade, they’ve watched Hoosiers the night before playing Central Catholic. Still, they end each game night by eating out together at a restaurant. I’m not sure that I’ve heard of a more tightly-knit group than these five.

The girls have seen each other through many accomplishments. Most recently they celebrated Myka’s induction into the 1000 point club. However, when taking a look back, they agreed in unison that the highlight of the year was defeating Crispus Attucks.

In a glance towards what is to come from the Fab Five, Tatum and Myka will be the only two to continue their basketball careers at the collegiate level, although we still await to hear about each their chosen schools. Morgan has chosen to continue her education at Marion University while Danielle and Erika have decided to attend Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI). Long-standing coach, John Gasser, said, “Most of the seniors have been playing together since 4th grade. They have won a lot of games together and will leave a big hole to fill when they graduate.”

Take it from these five, the years go by fast. Myka said, “I feel like I was a freshman just yesterday.”  All five of these talented athletes advised that the years go by fast and that you should always continue to make memories that will last.
