NBA All-Star Weekend recap

The NBA season came to a halt for at least one weekend as the league’s best came together in New Orleans, Louisiana. In the 66 edition of NBA All-Star Weekend, the first event of the break took place Friday night during the Celebrity All-Star Game. The game itself wasn’t so much a game as it was entertainment, but all eyes turned to six year old Jarrius Robertson when he made a basket in the fourth quarter of the game. Jarrius, who has a chronic liver disease, was a mainstay at All-Star Weekend with his high energy and boosted spirits. Famous impersonator Brandon Armstrong finished with MVP honors as he finished with 16 points and 15 rebounds.

After the Celebrity game came the Rising Stars Challenge, where Team USA competed against Team World. Jamal Murray got hot at the perfect time for Team World, as he scored a game high 36 points and won MVP honors as Team World beat Team USA 150-141. Frank Kaminsky led the way for Team USA with 33 points.

Saturday night presented the three most looked upon events of the weekend. The skills challenge came first, where the course consists of making a pass into the center circle of a tire, taking a ball and dribbling from coast to coast to make a layup, and finally going to the other side of the court to make a three pointer. On the big man’s side of the bracket, Kristaps Porzingis came out victorious to make it to the championship round. Where on the guards’ side, Gordon Hayward barely beat out Isaiah Thomas to match up against “The Unicorn” Porzingis. The centers came out away victorious as Kristaps barely squeaked by Hayward as they both got to the three point shot at the same time.

After the skills challenge came the Three Point Contest. With defending champ Klay Thompson exiting in the first round, there was an aura of energy knowing that there was going to be a new champion crowned. Eric Gordon and Kyrie Irving went to sudden death as they both scored a total of 20 points in the championship round, but Gordon prevailed as he was titled this year’s 3-Point Champion.

The Saturday night finale was somewhat of a snooze fest as the Dunk Contest didn’t live up to the hype. Dunking stars Deandre Jordan and Aaron Gordon were heavy favorites, but through lack of execution, and no creativity, they were eliminated after the first round. Newcomers Derrick Jones Jr. and Glenn Robinson III were competing for their first Dunk Contest crowns. It was Glenn Robinson, pulling out a perfect score, who was titled king of the dunk.

The only event on Sunday was the reason for all of these events, that being to watch the best of the best in the All-Star Game. The West team led by five at the break 97-92. Led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, who led the East team with 30 points, the East kept it close, but they couldn’t hang on as the West won 192-182. Anthony Davis won MVP honors as he set the single game record for points at 52 on his home court.
