Indiana Wins Old Oaken Bucket

Dating back to 1925, the Old Oaken Bucket has been a traditional rivalry football game between the Indiana Hoosiers and Purdue Boilermakers. This tradition took place at Memorial Stadium last Saturday, Nov. 26, where the Hoosiers beat the Boilermakers 26- 24.

The Boilermakers led for the majority of the fourth quarter, but the Hoosiers regained the lead late in the quarter, leaving Purdue with only four minutes to try to capture the lead back. The Hoosiers held strong on defense and latched on to their fourth Old Oaken Bucket game in a row, also sealing  their second straight trip to a bowl game later this year.

The overall total of Old Oaken Bucket victories is still led by the Boilermakers though who have 57 wins against Indiana’s now 29, but with a young team looking to keep progressing forward, Indiana has a very bright future ahead in years to come.

The Hoosiers, with this latest win, snapped their two game losing streak and finally caught their sixth win of the season. They will play again later in the year, but the Bucket game marked the season finale for the Boilers. Purdue ended their season with a 3-9 record which was culminated by a six game losing streak. Indiana, on the other hand, ended their regular season with a 6-6 record.

Purdue is looking toward an unsteady beginning next season considering that most, if not all, of the coaching staff will not return. After the mid-season firing of head coach Darrell Hazell, Boilermaker fans await the announcement of their next head coach. As for Indiana, they will find out their bowl game destination when the drawings are announced on Dec. 4.
