Students and custodians help maintain athletic facilities

With a new school year comes new athletic seasons. During each season, hundreds of athletes and fans frequent the various sports facilities at DCHS. Our community is very fortunate to have such nice facilities. Our sports fields and complexes don’t just take care of themselves though. The behind-the-scenes employees at DCHS are always hard at work.

One group who always helps tend to our athletic facilities is the the Ag Department. From laying sod on the baseball field to planting new grass seed at the football field, our Ag members have already been hard at work for the athletic department. In the past, our Ag members have aerated the football and baseball fields, mulched around our facilities to make them look clean and precise, and they have also been involved in adding irrigation to our fields.  Mr. Walker and his students save so much time and money for our school and coaches. They work for free, and are generally able to complete almost any task asked of them during a single school day. The Landscape Management classes, along with the help of the Ag mechanic students, are able to work efficiently in keeping our sports complexes up-to-date.

Another group of individuals who help maintain the sports facilities is the custodial crew. They clean up trash before and after an athletic event, and they are also on call when we have any problems with our technical equipment at these facilities, such as lights, sound, and irrigation. The custodial crew is also in charge of setting everything up before an athletic event. For example, they paint the lines on the football field on Friday before every home game. Before a basketball game, they make sure the bleachers are set up and that the bathrooms are unlocked.

Much of what these students and custodians do goes unnoticed. However, their hard work and dedication to DCHS make our athletic facilities what they are today.
