The seniors with the skillet

On a night that honored the undefeated 1964 team coached by hall of famer Tony Berto, the game itself was one for the record books. They always say: “Play until the clock hits zero, you never know what could happen,” and the Oracles’ comeback victory over cross county rival Carroll was a true testament to that saying as sophomore QB Weston Windell found senior WR Tyler Ross in the final minutes of the game for a touchdown and two-point conversion to seal the 21-20 win.

Carroll got on the board first with a short touchdown scamper by Brandon Dillon in the opening quarter. After a few offensive drives that ended with punts, the Oracles scored on a touchdown pass from Windell to senior WR Treavor Cox. After a missed extra point, the Oracles trailed the Cougars 7-6 at the halftime intermission. Delphi came out hot in the second half after a multiple hour lightening delay as junior RB Clint Rude broke free for a 32-yard touchdown run to go ahead 13-7. Rude totaled 75 yards on the ground in just one half of action.

The Oracles held their 6 point lead until the fourth quarter when Dillon came through again for the Cougars, first on a 13 yard run and then on a 46 yard pass from Carroll QB Jared Miller to take a 20-13 advantage with just a few minutes remaining. The final few minutes is when the magic ensued as Windell’s 67 yard heave to Ross for a touchdown got the score within one. A taunting flag took the ball back and the Oracles were forced to go for two from a longer distance than usual. Windell again hooked up with Ross in the corner of the endzone to secure the victory and the skillet. Windell ended the night with 180 yards and two touchdowns.

“I was proud of the poise our guys showed coming out after Carroll went up 7 with just over a minute to go. I felt we did a great job putting the kids in position to make plays at the end, and they came up big. Very proud of the overall team effort,” Strasser said.
