Sectional drought ends

Athletic director Mr. Wes Allen presents the sectional trophy to Delphi’s seniors.

After losing for a consecutive 9 years, the Delphi Oracles basketball team was finally able to bring home a sectional championship on Saturday night.

In the first game of the tournament on Tuesday, March 2, Delphi played the Blackhawks of Sheridan. At the half, DCHS had the lead by 2. It was expected to be a nail-biter, and it was nothing less than that. With all of the seniors leading the way, the Oracles secured the victory with a final score of 60-55.

During the semifinals, Delphi was able to get a win over a weak Clinton Central team, 78-37. It came as a relief because the Gophers were winning in the first quarter. Luckily the Oracles turned it on and finished very strong.  Fans also got to see the cross town rival Carroll Cougars  go down in defeat to the ensuing championship opponent, Fountain Central.

In the championship game, after being down most of the first quarter, Delphi picked it up in the second, finishing the half with a 2-point lead over Fountain Central. After the third, it was 40-29 Delphi, but could still go either way. Delphi finished with a solid  57-47 win over the Mustangs to earn the first sectional title since 2004.

This weekend, Delphi travels down to the Tipton Regional to battle Tipton,  a team who narrowly beat the Oracles earlier this year. “They got the better of us first time around, but this time we’re coming out guns-a-blazin’,” said junior Kolby Myer.
